The Birthsong Project: 8/26-9/1

New, 1 comment

Even professional athletes celebrate their birthdays. This week, there are four such players on teams based out of Florida. This series looks at what was the number one song the week they were born. Follow along after the jump.

Rashean Mathis - Jacksonville Jaguars - cornerback - 8/27/80

Olivia-Newton John - Magic

You have to believe we are magic
Nothin' can stand in our way
You have to believe we are magic
Don't let your aim ever stray

You know what's magic? A former Pro Bowl starter with the same team for nine seasons in a row. Mathis looks to add to his Jaguars all-time record 30 career interceptions from his familiar slot in the defensive secondary.

David Price - Tampa Bay Rays - pitcher - 8/26/85

Huey Lewis and the News - The Power of Love

It don't take money and it don't take fame
Don't need no credit card to ride this train
Tougher than diamonds and stronger than steel

The power of love has helped Price, a three-time all star, lead the AL with 16 victories and a 2.28 earned run average this season.

Desmond Wynn - Tampa Bay Buccaneers - offensive guard - 8/31/88

George Michael - Monkey

I tried my best
But your head is such a mess

Wynn went unselected in the 2012 draft, but signed a free agent contract to try and make the Bucs out of camp. Current projections have him on the outside looking in, but the Bucs O-line is such a mess that he may yet have a chance.

Justin Harper - Orlando Magic - forward - 8/30/89

Richard Marx - Right Here Waiting

Wherever you go, whatever you do
I will be right here waiting for you

Signed for one more season at the NBA's minimum salary, Harper is just waiting for his chance to get some serious minutes. He scored 20 points with 12 rebounds in 84 minutes last season over 14 games.
